How
to Start a New Men's
Group for Your Church
Organizing a Local
Wesleyan Men Chapter
Good organization enables groups to maintain unity, maximize
resources, work smarter, and accomplish more. Here is a
step-by-step plan for initiating a new men's ministry team in
your local church.
1. GETTING STARTED
A. Consult with your pastor, securing his or her advice and
support for launching the local chapter.
B. The pastor or designated contact person should contact
the Wesleyan Men General Office, P.O. Box 50434, Indianapolis,
IN 46250, 317/570-5125. Request registration and promotional
materials.
2. THE FIRST MEETING
A. Under the pastor's direction, plan a preliminary meeting
to which all the men of the church are invited. Promote this
through bulletins, church services, personal letters,
invitations, phone calls and posters.
B. For the first meeting, follow the format below:
1. Devotions
2. Presentation of the purpose and ministries of Wesleyan Men.
See the Welcome to the Team section of this Wesleyan
Men Leader’s Manual for ideas.
3. Adopt a motion to organize a local chapter.
4. Elect a nominating committee of three to five members
over which the pastor will serve as chairperson. This
committee will present two or more nominations for the Local
Wesleyan Men President to be approved by the Local Board of
Administration and elected at the next meeting. The nominating
committee should also present nominations at the next meeting
for all other officers, committee members and delegates. The
nominating committee must prepare a slate of nominations for
at least the executive committee officers, which include the
vice president, secretary and treasurer. The secretary and
treasurer may be combined as one office. Only the executive
officers and delegates must be full members of The Wesleyan
Church. See The Discipline of The Wesleyan Church
(3620:4).
5. Set a time and place for the next meeting, during which
the local chapter will be officially organized.
6. Adjourn.
3. THE ORGANIZATIONAL MEETING
A. Preparations for this meeting must include the approval
of the nominations for WM President by the Local Board of
Administration and other nominations as prepared by the
nominating committee.
B. For the organizational meeting, follow the
format below:
1. Devotions or program.
2. Election of Officers.
a) Executive officer shall be elected by ballot
b) Other officers, delegates and committee members may be
elected in any manner desired.
c) In all cases, the election shall be by a majority of those
present and voting.
3. Installation of officers by the District Wesleyan Men
President or Pastor.
4. Set the time and place for regular monthly meetings.
5. Briefly discuss men's ministry ideas group members would
like their newly-elected leaders to consider.
6. Adjourn.
C. After the organizational meeting, be sure
to register your local chapter with the General Office of
Wesleyan Men and report your newly elected WM president's name
and address. Communication from the General Office will be sent
to the WM president based on the information supplied.
