IN SEARCH OF HAPPINESS How Do I Find Happiness When So Many Others Have Missed It? Psalm 1 {1} Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. {2} But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. {3} He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers. {4} Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away. {5} Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. {6} For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish (NIV). WARM-UP
All of us want to be happy. We sometimes believe that if only we could win the lottery, get a new job, make the right friend, afford the right things, or be recognized by the right people, we would be happy. Happiness is often attached to happenings. If the right things happen, we can be happy. The Bible tells us that happiness is more related to internal characteristics than external happenings. Let’s see what Psalm 1 can teach us about finding happiness. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PERSON WHO IS "BLESSED" Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. The first word of this psalm is the word "blessed." Probably the best meaning we could give this word is "happy."
The first characteristic describes what he does not do:
The second characteristic is a positive one—he delights in the law of the Lord, and on His law he meditates day and night.
The psalm now changes to look at the other type of person. This person is referred to as "the wicked."
ULTIMATE HAPPINESS COMES FROM KNOWING ULTIMATE DESTINY
Verse 5 indicates that there will be a time of judgment. There are always consequences for our actions. At some point, all of us will have to face up to what we have done in our lives. Ultimately we will not pass judgment on ourselves, but we will answer to God. This verse tells us that the wicked—sinners—will not be able to stand the judgment of God that is based on the standard of righteousness.
. The final verse describes God’s action toward the two types of persons.
SUMMARY Let me summarize what this psalm is telling us.
APPLICATION Bible study is only meaningful when we are able to apply it to our lives. This is fairly easy to do when you study the Psalms because they speak so directly to personal emotions and situations. This psalm has told us that happiness is found in knowing God and living righteously. Is your search for happiness including God? Has anyone ever helped you understand that you can get to know Him and have a personal relationship with Him? Our journey through the Psalms will help you discover more about yourself, about the meaning of life, and about God. PRAYER We want to close each one of our studies with prayer. Prayer is simply talking to God. It is a time to be grateful for each other, for what we are enjoying in life, and for the kind of people we will continue to become with God’s help. It is a time to tell Him what we are feeling and experiencing for which we need His help or guidance. So if you are facing something you would like for me to talk to God about in your behalf, you will have a chance to share that at the end of each study. Is there anything you want to have included in this closing prayer? (Pray a short, simple prayer.) |
