Role Exploring: Mission

As you take time to explore your spiritual gifts, passion, and interests, you will discover them coming together in ways that will help you minister and serve most effectively. Something that can help you refine some of your experiences is a mission statement.

A Personal Life Mission Statement is a work in process for all of us. Generally, it may change a little over the span of your life. Yet, this statement can be a tool you use to stay focused on the main things God has called you to do. It can help you pay attention to the top priorities that you and God have agreed are yours to implement.

Seeing an example is the way to understand what a “Personal Life Mission Statement” is. My personal life mission is “To encourage, equip and mobilize the people God brings around me to help them foster a biblically transformed life and to fulfill their role in the harvest as a kingdom builder.”

Don't be discouraged if you feel like your own statement is not that complex yet. The one you just read has been under construction for over 15 years. The point is taking time to key in on the gifts, passions and interests God has given you. That will help you the most.

A formula I learned for constructing a mission statement went like this:

“To + (2-3 action verbs) + (for/with/to whom the service happens) to +(2-3 causes/activities or effects in the lives of those served).”

This formula is one that you may want to pray a lot about as you start filling in the blanks. Consider talking with a mentor or another positive individual who has been watching your life and who knows you well as you work on this statement.

The “Beyond the Line” seminars that are coming to your district after Charlotte 2003 will spend more time in this area, but you have a basic framework now for getting started on thinking about a Personal Life Mission Statement.

If you have not registered for the Servant Reality Follow-up Project mentioned at the Charlotte 2003 convention, you may want to do that now, so that you can receive specific information about when a “Beyond the Line” weekend is coming your way.
