Biblical or Historical Mentoring: How Would I Get Started?

There are so many ways to study a person's life and ministry. Here are a few questions to help get you started.

  • Who do I want to study?
  • Why does their life interest me?
  • What do I want to learn and apply to my life that I will glean from their life?
  • Where will I find the information to get started?
  • When will I start?

Studies can be as simple or as thorough as you choose them to be. Here's a sample of how simple it can be based on a study I did of a great man I heard about.

Person I Studied: R.G. LeTourneau - Inventor of much of today's heavy excavation equipment

Point of Interest that Attracted Me: Perseverance

Sources for Learning: Book autobiography - Mover of Men and Mountains ; Internet search for “LeTourneau”

What I Observed: LeTourneau had a number of good opportunities to quit. He ran out of money at a few different points in his life; he was trying something people hadn't done before; and he would often take jobs that were larger than his abilities.

What Impacted Me: LeTourneau just never let the idea of quitting settle into his thinking. His confidence in God is very cool. Sometimes I feel like quitting and I don't have nearly the obstacles LeTourneau faced. If God helped him make it in the huge ups and downs he had, I know God will help me through some of the issues I'm facing. I can be reminded God is working things in my life. God says I can make it; the enemy says I can't make it: who am I going to believe?

Other studies you could pursue based on the life of R.G. LeTourneau are:
  • generosity
  • creativity
  • faithfulness
  • embracing God's mission for you

You get the general idea. It's one more tool to help you continue your personal and spiritual growth. It can be really cool as you get to know some people God has used. We trust it will inspire and excite as you consider His continued path in your life. So…

  • Who do you want to study?
  • Why does their life interest you?
  • What do you want to learn and apply to your life from theirs?
  • Where will you find information to get started?
  • When will you start?
